Chemical industry in Chongqing is developing steadily. Gross industrial output value in 2002 was 10.04 billion yuan, an increase of 12.68% than that of 2001. It was the first time that gross industrial output value in chemical industry had exceeded 10 billion yuan in Chongqing 's history.

Adjustment of ownership structure in Chongqing chemical industry made much headway in 2002. As per economic nature, in 2002, output value of newly limited-liability companies increased by 96.21% than that of 2001; that of chemical industry in counties increased by 21.51%; that of the private chemical industry increased by 17%; that of the joint-stock enterprises rose by 1.82%. As per trade, output value of raw materials in chemical industry in 2002 increased by 17.74% than that of 2001; that of fertilizers increased by 10.91%; that of coatings increased by 14.17%; and that of rubber products increased by 16.71%.

According to the statistics of Chongqing CIQ, among other industrial chemicals, glycol and phenylethylene are the two basic ones in a great demand by Chongqing . In 2001, import volume of these two kinds of products was US$23.31 million and US$10.26 million respectively. However, there's no import in phenylethylene and the import volume of glycol was only US$5.7 million in 2002, less than 1/4 of that in 2001. In the first 3 quarters of 2003, import volume of glycol was US$930,000, decreasing 83.6% than that of the same period in 2002; and moreover, there's no import in phenylethylene.

The leading enterprises engaged in chemical industry in Chongqing are as follows:

• Chongqing Changfeng Chemical Plant: It mainly specializes in producing organic fine chemicals and complex chemical compounds with phosgene and aromatic amines as main intermediates, and providing processing services in phosgenation.
• Chongqing Chuandong Chemical (Group) Co., Ltd.: Main products include yellow phosphorus phosphoric acid, phosphoric sodium series, industrial-grade sodium formate, potassium formate, formic acid, phosphorus trichloride, thioridazine HCL, chemical reagents series and so on.
• Yangzijiang Acetyl Chemical Co., Ltd.: The main product is vinegar acid.
• China Petro-Chemical Corporation Sichuan Vinylon Works: Main products like "Chuanwei" polyvinyl alcoholic resin and "Chuanwei" short fiber (1.56dtex¡Á35mm) were granted as Chongqing famous-brand products in 2000.
• Fuling Chemical Industry Co., Ltd.: "Tengsheng" mono ammonium phosphate, one of its main products, was granted as Chongqing famous-brand product in 2002.
• Chongqing Natural Gas Purification Works: Its main product, "Changzheng" industrial sulphuric acid, was granted as Chongqing famous-brand product in 2001.

Chongqing has achieved great success in new products' development and research of chemical industry in 2002. Accordingly, a large number of chemical enterprises accelerated steps in industrial innovation and upgrading, and substantially raised economic benefits. New products' output value in chemical industry achieved 1.55 billion yuan in 2002, a growth of 15.28% than that in 2001. For instance, Chongqing Changfeng Chemical Plant has successfully industrialized its industrial test of polycarbonate with "ester exchange", only to achieve an annual capacity of 2,000 tons. Chongqing Research Institute of Chemical Industry has passed acceptance test of acetylene furnace of natural gas revolving blaze and thus achieved new products' output value of 2.61 million yuan. The potassium formate production line with an annual capacity of 8000 tons, which was developed by Chongqing Chuandong Chemical (Group) Co., Ltd., has been put into production and the products have successfully passed trial use in domestic large oil fields.
